Oakville Bone Centre is extensively involved in
advancing new treatment options for Osteoporosis..
The Centre is also actively invoved in researching
improved methods for the diagnosiss of Osteoporosis.
Patients may choose to participate in current
research trials. These trials enable patients
to access new therapies before general release.
All clinical trials conducted at the Oakville
Bone Centre are approved by the university centre
as well as ethics review boards. Listed below
are additonal areas of clinical research currently
being conducted at the Oakville Bone Centre.
1. The effectiveness of aminobisphosphonates on
bone mineral density testing in
postmenopausal women with osteoporosis is being
conducted. This study will
compare the effectiveness of potent aminobisphosphonates
currently being utilized in
the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
2. An epidemiological study of the prevalence
of vitamin D deficiency in postmenopausal
women on current therapy for osteoporosis is currently
in process.
3. A parathyroid hormone therapy is being evaluated
in order to determine its
effectiveness in reducing fracture in postmenopausal
women with osteoporosis.
4. The usefulness of markers of bone turnover
in monitoring bisphosphonate therapy in
postmenopausal women is currently in process.
5. Calcitonin and its significant effects on the
relief of bone pain in postmenopausal
women with fractures is being evaluated.
6. The usefulness of intravenous bisphosphonates
in patients with advanced osteoporosis
is being evaluated.
7. The effectiveness of bisphosphonates in patients
with primary hyperparathyroidism is
being evaluated.
